Archaeological Site of Akrotiri in Santorini
This it the most prominent archaeological site in Santorini, the systematic excavations began in 1967.Located at the southwestern part of the island, the archaeological site has opened for the visitors on April 2012. First signs of habitation date back to the Late Neolithic Period (4th millennium BC) expanded in the Middle and Late Bronze Age (20th-17th centuries BC), the settlment has become one of the main urban centers of the Aegean.
A very well-planed infrastructure and an elaborate sewage system, while also imported products found inside the building, are elements that reveal a settlement that actually conducted business with the Greek mainland, Crete, Dodecanese, Cyprus, Syria, and Egypt.
The growth of the town ended abruptly at the end of the 17th century BC. Its inhabitants left due to powerful seismic foreshocks. When the volcano erupted, volcanic material covered the town and the rest of the island, preserving the buildings and their contents to this day.
